Johnny is a bright young anthropologist from Howard, using his expertise to build community by touring neighborhoods with patrons who would never have the access otherwise. In this instance, Johnny and I walked through Shaw/16th street/Logan stopping at residences of African American women with leading roles in the community (and DC being what it is, nationally) during the 19th and 20th centuries. I was familiar with two of the historical figures, as I had learned of them at the Smithsonian, but ignorant of the other four. Most importantly, Johnny connected the dots between them and within their shared environment. Moreover, as a woman I was impressed with his intimate understanding of the lives of these persons and their important roles, near and far. Johnny was also patient and non judgmental about my relative ignorance, my many questions, and having to repeat the most current vocabulary for such concept as the "circle of knowledge" that helped enslaved persons to escape and gain their rightful freedom. If you're local, go. If you're visiting, and you're a woman, a man, an American, a foreigner, black, not black, and want to learn something different than the usual DC fare, go.
