Having been born and raised in Calgary I knowing the culture around food and the reality of food insecurity. Growing up in the garden during the short summers we had, I found the healing properties not only through the nutrition alone of home grown food but from the cultivation of the crops. Connecting with my ancestors and learning about the history of Mennonites I began to learn more and more onto the resilience. Doug has been living in Calgary for over a decade now and five years ago decided to start his garden in the empty lot beside his heritage apartment. He could have never imagined the power it had to provide, to bring the community together and lead the revolution of sustainable urban farming in Calgary.
Our tour will be through the empty lot beside the heritage building Doug lives in. This lot has been given an immense amount of care over the past 5 years doug has been bringing in loads of dirt, compost, hay, wood chips and is in constant motion growing into a community space.
