Welcome to my home and studio followed by an introduction to the history and philosophy of Sumi-e (Oriental Brush Painting) over a fragrant tea service. We will also enjoy my art collection and learn how the Impressionists improved their strokes studying this discipline. We will then proceed to prepare to paint. I will provide you with a Chinese brush and two sheets of rice paper. I will have an ink stone and stick for you to experience grinding your "colors," the Masters consider the variations of ink colors. We will then practice our strokes for bamboo stalks, leaves and seams. You will be surprised at how much fun it is to perform the "airplane stroke." We will then use our second sheet of rice paper to paint a bamboo composition. Before you leave I will have a remembrance gift for each of you.
I am an instructor and Sumi-e (Oriental Brush) painter and former New England Chapter President. Now, I paint with an accomplished group of painters in Sarasota, Florida's Sumi-e Society Chapter. This way of painting is actually a discipline, using both your left and right brain, anyone can learn. I have published articles about the practice in the National Sumi-e publication and am passionate about sharing the joys of freeing oneself and creating art with your spirit and inspiration. I traveled to Japan and China in the early 1980's, visited with Master painters and "forbidden" art center

We will visit my studio area, the other areas of the home where my art collection is located as well as the painting area where I will demonstrate the procedures first.
最多可有4位年满12周岁的参与者参加。 Guests should be comfortable with my two small cats who roam the house and lanai/pool area.
Wear comfortable clothing. India ink is permanent, so be careful so that you do not ruin your clothes. After painting, you may want to eat lunch nearby, there are many options I can tell you about.
