We start the tour early in the morning visiting an orange farm where a passionate farmer will introduce you to the fascinating and ancient traditions of Silves oranges culitavation. He will describe the different kinds of citrus and production techniques, as well as various tips from irrigation to collection. You will pick the fruit yourself assisted by a skilled staff and taste your own orange juice on site. We'll then move to Silves, walking through the historic cobble streets from the Arade river up to the castle. We will stop at three different tabernas, tasting delicious food and wine, locally sourced from the inland Algarve. For food lovers looking to delve deeper into the culinary delights of the region, we first stop for a little something to whet the appetite tasting raw ham produced in a family run black porks production in Monchique paired with seasoned cheese from Alentejo. We then stop at two more traditional restaurants while learning about Silves fascinating past along the way. Our last stop will be at a local liquor factory where you can taste a unique spirit made from oranges and medronho fruits and see how the distillation process works.
We are Gloria&Mateus, the owner of the rural B&B Gato Preto de Silves. Previously working in London in the financial industry, we fell in love with the small town of Silves and its genuine produce and people, so in 2012 we renovated an old ruin dating back to 1920 were today we run our B&B, surrounded by orange and lemon groves. Twice a week we love to share our passion and knowledge about genuine products, local farmers and traditional restaurants, introducing our guests to the fascinating history of this medieval town and its beautiful countryside.
Traditional seafood "petiscos". Meet and cheese selection from the inland Algarve
