You'll explore the hip, Bucktown/Wicker Park neigborhood, via its pizza. Your doughcent will meet you at Bonci - Wicker Park, where you'll get your official lanyard/badge, then learn about the 10 styles of pizza in Chicago. You'll first try Roman al taglio, then a proper Chicago deep-dish (NOT stuffed), a New York slice and finally, a complex artisan pie. You'll taste four different styles of pizza in three hours, while meeting some of the owners and other people behind the pies, learning about local history as well.
I'm a 13-time James Beard Award-winner, and the Food Reporter at ABC 7 Chicago. I've been covering food in Chicago since '95, and am author of "Pizza City USA: 101 Reasons Why Chicago Is America's Greatest Pizza Town." The tours are based on the book, and each tour features four styles of pizza in three hours. Some tours will be led by my team of trained "doughcents," uniquely qualified to talk about Chicago's pizza history.
You'll taste four different styles of pizza, including: Roman al taglio, artisan, deep-dish and NYC slice.
Water free; soda & alcohol can be purchased at three of the four stops.
You'll first see America's first location of Bonci, a Roman import that opened its first al taglio-style pizzeria in Chicago. Then we'll stroll up Damen Ave., learning more about Bucktown. Our second stop takes us to My Pi, for a classic deep-dish you'll never find downtown. Third stop is Dimo's for a giant, foldable slice, and finally, a walk through Wicker Park to Craft, for a one-of-a-kind artisan pie with market-driven produce.
