My husband and I are both native Houstonians with a deep love for communication and history. We met at the University of Texas at Austin, where I studied Communication Studies with a concentration in Political Communications, and gave tours of campus my entire time there. My husband studied Government and African American history, and taught history as a certified teacher. We love Black history, and want to share the deep Black history Houston has to offer.

Awesome, awesome tour! Definitely letting everyone that I know about this tour, and what I learned. Everyone should get educated on their ancestors before them. I love my culture, my people! #blackexcellence✊🏾

I recommend the tour - you learn some sides of Houston and American history that aren’t always told often enough. Victoria balanced history with personal stories and modern implications in a thorough but efficient manner. It was a real highlight and I’m so glad she is taking the time to make history come alive.

The Freedmen's Town walking tour was so excellent and deepened my appreciation of Houston's past and present, U.S. history, and even more places and layers of the downtown (and beyond) that make Houston such a unique and complicated place. Victoria communicated quickly and made the meeting easy for the five of us attending (2 Houstonians, and 3 visitors). The tour was anchored by stops at four historic black churches emblematic of the evolution of Freedmen's Town, a city adjacent to Houston created by emancipated slaves in the latter part of the nineteenth-century. These churches, however, really provide a frame for a much more complex experience, ranging from architecture, history, walking neighborhoods quietly tucked into the downtown, and reflections on black history as a formative part of Houston's story. The African American Library at the Gregory School was a particularly special discovery, and seeing the several restorations-in-progress of historic homes gives a hopeful sense that this unique aspect of Houston's past and present will be preserved for future learning. Victoria was an informative and welcoming guide. In addition to bringing water and protein bars, she communicated clearly about our route, attended to all safety issues, and fielded any and all questions thoughtfully and with candor. Importantly, the tour also raised invaluable questions and reflections on slavery and the role of freed slaves in creating U.S. cities and shaping Texas culture, internal diversity within the black community, the benefits and pitfalls of Houston's low zoning regulations, current trends in multi-unit condo developments and high-cost housing, how freeways divide communities, the mixed role of gentrification and how those moving in to areas might work with neighbors to understand what came before and what is significant now, and the leadership of black communities in preserving the rich and sometimes troubled history of Houston's racial, economic, geographic, and ethnic story, which is still unfolding. The visit to the oldest Jewish cemetery and temple was an unexpected stop which tied into black history, Houston history, even as Victoria spoke of recent threats to area synagogues that required the visible police presence we could see. The tour ended at Sam Houston park, which hosts two historic Freedmen homes among many other buildings, gardens, playground, etc--that I was not aware of. This was a great tour and experience, recommended for life-long Houstonians or weekend visitors.
