We’ll start at the Patriot arch at the corner of the grounds where we’ll briefly get to know each other. Then we’ll stroll around to the original Lincoln gate where we’ll enter the cemetery. Using a map, we’ll explore this colonial burying ground together. I’ll walk with you along the wall of orphan tombstones, explaining its significance and origin. I’ll tell you the history of Colonial Park Cemetery as we walk to important markers and I’ll relay known details on the people those stones commemorate. I’ll take you to the duelists’ grave and describe the duels in Savannah, pointing out those who died in this historically violent ritual. Hear about and see evidence of vandalism and fire damage and neglect. Desecrated graves, missing vaults, excavation projects, and so much more. We will discuss the decency of building a city atop the dead, and focus mostly on Savannah during the American Revolution.
