Not just for transit buffs, the tour is a unique way to see the city's iconic sites like a local! During the morning we will take light rail, Sydney's double-decker trains, a ferry under the Harbour Bridge, and a bus across the heart of the city from Central to Circular Quay.
In addition to riding the city's existing transport modes, we will uncover vestiges of long-gone forms of transport such as the oldest train tunnel in Australia and remnants of the Sydney Monorail from the 1980s. We'll also see the construction of Sydney's new light rail system and the Metro subway system, slated to open in 2024. Along the way there will be great photo ops of the Opera House and Bridge from the ferry.
You'll learn about the history of the system, including the City Circle railway designed by the engineer of the Harbour Bridge JJC Bradfield, check out an amazing new sculpture made from the system's old wooden escalators, and find out why Wynyard has platforms 3-6, but no 1 and 2!
*Due to operation changes outside of my control, the itinerary may have to change. Every effort will be made to take all forms of transit, but there is a chance specific services may not be running on a given day.
Other things to note
This tour will allow you to become familiar with Sydney transport, but we will also be walking (about 5km/3mi) during the course of the morning. Be prepared for weather and we'll have a great time :)

My name's Michael and I'm a transport designer with a background in architecture and history. Straddling the rails of academia and architectural practice, I am currently completing my PhD on transport development in Sydney while assisting with the design for Sydney's new Metro subway system.
While my accent may betray me as an import, I have called Sydney home over the past eight years. I'm excited to introduce you to the amazing 150-year history of the network that keeps Sydneysiders moving!

The tour will start at Darling Harbour where we'll see ghost stations of the Sydney Monorail. Light rail will take us to Central Station to explore the grand building and hear about a battle fought there in 1916. After a quick train trip to Circular Quay, we'll board a ferry under the Harbour Bridge to Barangaroo and walk up to Wynyard under the CBD. Finally, we'll take a bus to Railway Square and walk the Goods Line back to where we began.
