First thing to know is that we will be making Kleina, Iceland’s oldest “cake” or deep fried sweet bread from scratch! It can take 1-2 hours, but if the time isn’t good for you, send me a message and we can make a new time that is better for you. I will welcome you in my home like the old days in Iceland, with fresh coffee and some Kleina and will share a short presentation with some facts and stories about this delicacy. Then the fun part starts and you’ll put your apron on and will begin baking with help and guidance. I’ll share some of the magic and secrets to baking not only good Kleina, but the best available! After the baking you’ll have time to taste what you’ve made with some more coffee and milk, like the old days. All participants will take some Kleina home, with a recipe to make it again. If you have any allergies like wheat, egg, or milk, (or are a vegan) let me know and I’ll have a solution. Share the love!
“Hæ hæ” everyone! I’m Rakel, born and raised in Iceland. I’m happy, bubbly, and fun. I am a preschool teacher and also a yoga teacher, a mother of two, and partner to a Spaniard. I have always loved to bake and cook and watched my grandmother make this recipe. In the old days Icelanders would offer guests coffee and this adorable fried bread, Kleina. Still in 2019, we welcome guests with food or baked goods. Baking is a big part of Icelandic culture—from the Viking times up until today. Every family in Iceland has their own hidden recipe for Kleina (and there are thousands out there), but let me tell you, I have the best one. Come and experience it yourself and make some Kleina in my home.
