We have an evolving public art culture that is largely powered by grassroots efforts. I will take you to see most of the public art in downtown. I can tell you about the artists and the stories behind the works. I can also answer questions and give insight into the community organizations that power our public art installations! This is a a three mile walking tour (2 hours of walking). The tour will take us to all corners of downtown Fort Wayne. We will start at the Depot, the only surviving example of that style of train depot in the world. Midway through the walk we will stop in a local spot, enjoy a hot beverage of your choice (on me), and I will teach you one of my favorite drawing games. The entire tour and coffee shop stop should last 2 hours. This is an outdoor tour, so it is best to book in nice weather. The tour is unavailable in ice, snow or heavy rain.
My name is Alex, and I am a local studio artist & muralist. I've been working as a full-time artist for 6 years. I travel the country selling my paintings & installing murals. I am also a passionate advocate for public art. The public realm is greatly enhanced by art, and in order to promote & increase the amount of public art in Fort Wayne, I partnered with our downtown economic improvement district to build a comprehensive public art program, Art This Way. (www.ArtThisWayFW.com). I also have two pieces of public art installed in downtown.
The walking portion of the tour takes us throughout downtown. We will start on the upper east side of downtown, and walk through to the lower west side. We will stop at a coffee shop or other local spot to play a game, use the washrooms and have a beverage!
Wear comfortable walking shoes
We can walk at any pace that the group requires, however, if we are walking slowly we may need to skip some art in order to complete the tour within the 2 hour time limit.
