Meet me where the land meets the sea! We'll start our lesson in the sand, where I'll introduce myself and go over basic ocean safety information. We'll then practice some techniques such as popping up and balancing before making our way to the water. Once in the ocean we'll start our lesson in waist-high water, where you can feel comfortable learning to paddle into waves and standing up. We'll do this for about an hour, resting whenever you might need a break. If you have some surfing experience before this lesson, we may also paddle out to deeper water, where we will work on riding down the line and turning the board.
Ryan & Surfvive
I'm a waterman and director of SurfVive, a non-profit on a mission to grow sustainable communities through surfing, gardening, and art. I was born and raised surfing the Texas Gulf Coast and worldwide. I've been teaching and coaching surfing for over 10 years, and am both CPR and first aid certified. I believe that introducing people to surfing creates a special bond between that person and the sea that forever transforms the way they look at the world. Learning to surf creates a new awareness of how our everyday decisions affect the ocean and our planet.
See the side of Texas rarely seen- the view from the Gulf. South Padre Island is home to the best waves in Texas and classic blue-green waters that are warm most of the year. Isla Blanca Park is home to a local beach break perfect for beginner surf lessons. You don't need an oil rig or wave pool here- the waves come straight from the sea!
