*Dress in Kimono and Hakama, the clothes of the Samurai. *Learn about the history of Samurai and their swords. *Watch a performance of "Iaido" (the art of swordsmanship) by a master swordsman. *Learn about posture, and how to hold, sheathe and unsheathe a sword. *Master a few basic sword moves using practice swords. *Wield a real samurai sword to cut a roll of tatami (straw matting). *Guests can take short videos and photos throughout the experience.
Originally from the UK, I have lived in Kyoto for over a decade. I am a professional Japanese armourer and, along with my amazing team, I love sharing Japanese culture with the rest of the world. Kawata-san is Samurai Juku’s Iaido master. Hailing from long line of Samurai, Kawata has practiced the art of Japanese swordplay since he was a boy. Over the years he has won some of Japan’s most prestigious Iaido awards, and attained the title ‘Renshi’ (far higher than black belt). We both look forward to welcoming you to Samurai Juku.

Samurai Juku is located above an ancient armorer in the heart of Kyoto, close to Nijo Castle, the seat of power for the Shoguns in the old capital. Sessions are performed inside our "dojo" (training room), but if the weather permits we will use the real swords out in the garden.
