We will walk around the European Quarters and other places of power in the center of Brussels. I will help you feel the historic and geographic connections between the earlier Belgian colonial city and today’s EU institutions. We will be mindful of what architecture, statues and public spaces say about influence. I will tell the story of what EU buildings represent politically and how the work there impacts all Europeans. We will also look at the lifestyle of the eurocrats working there. This is an interactive storytelling tour, and I encourage guests to share their own experiences with the EU institutions. The tour’s 16 stops will broadly follow the axis of rue de la Loi. They will bring us from the historic Park of Brussels to the EU’s triple center of power: the Commission, Council and Parliament. Along the way, I will reveal a few secrets of the city. The walking tour takes about 3,5 hours. Note that: we will not enter any EU building: access constraints (badge, wait, advance notice, etc) would distract us from the general story of the tour.
I tell stories through art and politics, I have a background in both: I make documentaries and I’m a political scientist specialized on European Affairs. Brussels is my home for 12 years,I worked most of it for institutions in the EU quarter. I’ve guided ministers and other VIPs around the neighborhood but prefer to show it to real people. Thank you for your nice comments about the tour! I always try to find unique ways of putting pieces together. It is fun helping visitors peek behind the scenes;) I want all to feel what’s going on either through revealing the secrets or examining in detail.
We will follow a route along rue de la Loi that specially fits the narrative I will share with you. It mixes very public, but rarely visited places, we will learn the politics such as the Belgian Senate and Berlaymont, with “secret” places that help to tell the real story. We will definitely stay away from Manneken Pis :-)
