You will learn techniques and materials for waterbased screenprinting. I only take two (at most three) 'students' at a time so you have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and explore techniques. You can print a one or two colour design on 5 cards (5 x 7 inch - supplied with envelopes) or paper. You can also choose to print on cotton fabrics such as a tee shirt, or pillowcase if you supply it! Alternatively, I have a small supply of cotton tea towels and cushion covers that can be purchased at cost price on the day. It is handy if you have a design in mind or we can provide examples. The techniques used will depend on the design to be printed and may include photostencils with hand drawn or inkjet , printed positives, hand cut film or paper stencils or working directly on the screen mesh. Please let me know if you prefer to print on paper or fabric when you book as slightly different screens are required for each.
Susi & Graham
My background in screen printing dates back to the 1970s when I first worked for a screen printer and then lectured at the London College of Printing. However, the chemicals used at the time were highly toxic and damaging, so I left the industry but I never lost my love of printing, and the introduction of water-based inks a few years ago was enough to entice me into establishing my own screen-printing studio where I undertake commissions, work with local artists and tutor small groups.
We will be located in our small printing studio in converted farm outbuilding and most of our activity will be indoors although we may also take the opportunity to collect materials outside. Crafts such as pottery, guitar-making , a jeweler and picture-framing are also on site . The stunning location also has a small lake, horses and sometime cattle in the adjacent fields.
You do not need to be an artist or good at drawing! We can base designs on photographs, plants or sketches if these can be sent by email in advance of your session. I can then use these to make 'positives'. Do not worry if this is not possible as we can improvise on the day.
