体验内容

Upon arriving you will be welcomed by me, James. I will introduce myself and invite you to introduce yourself to me and possibly other new people. After introductions, I will tell you all about Soapstone, from where it comes from to how it is transformed into sculptures and artwork. I will show you pictures of the Soapstone quarries and show samples of pre-carved Soapstone, as well as show you some of my finished Soapstone art. Next, I will personally do a demonstration on how to paint, shine, and carve designs into Soapstone. Then you will get to practice painting, shining, and carving on a flat piece of soapstone before receiving your own 6 inch bowl and to paint, shine, and carve designs into. We will break for lunch/dinner, in which I will have a Kenyan lunch/dinner ready for you (most likely beans & rice or Githeri-a mixture of beans & corn). Throughout the entire experience, I will be happy to answer any questions and assist you if you need help on your own bowls. This experience is interactive and hands on, it is NOT just a lecture. When you are finished with your bowl, you will be able to leave at your leisure (and take home your new personally made soapstone bowl).
Other things to note
Wear clothing that you would not mind getting stained (there is a possibility of paints staining your clothes).

Also, my place is located up some stairs and is not handicap accessible, my apologies.

My name is James and as early as I can remember Soapstone has been a part of my life. I grew up around Soapstone (seeing my family/community making their living off of Soapstone: mining, carving, washing, painting, shining, designing, and selling), in the village of Tabaka (the only place in Africa Soapstone is found, just over 6 hours Northwest of Nairobi), located within Kisii County. When I was a teenager, I too got into the Soapstone business to help support my family and have since made a career out of it. I have been painting and designing Soapstone for 15 years.

This experience will be taking place from within my living room, in my house (apartment complex) here in Nairobi, since Tabaka (where Soapstone comes from) is over 6 hours away. I have a private bathroom within my house too, so no need to worry if/when nature calls. I also have wifi at my house, which is free to my guests, if you wish to use that during your time here.

I made my own soapstone, this is a different experience that I would definitely recommend to someone that wants to do something different and explore their creative side. please do this with an open mind. James is very warm and welcoming. I really loved the dish he made for me, ask for the sukuma wiki, with chapati and ndengu sauce, so nice. I'm gonna try making the ndengu sauce at home. it's also a vegan-friendly meal. this is a great experience, i highly recommend it.

Just back from painting n carving my own soap-stone bowl, learning about soap-stone in Kenya and enjoying James' delicious githeri and warmhearted hospitality - it was a wonderful afternoon altogether adn I hope to be back some time in the future! James took great care to make the two of us feel at home and at ease, gave us ample time to choose colours n designs and was an attentive host and facilitator. He also communicated promptly before the experience and made sure we got an Uber home. Felt well taken care of and recommend this experience wholeheartedly!

During our recent visit to Kenya, my husband and I decided to do this experience and I must say that meeting James and learning about his craft was truly a highlight and an unforgettable experience. This is a must do while in Nairobi! James invited us into his home (yes, it was out of our comfort zone... going to a strangers home in a country where we are obviously tourists), but James treated us as family and welcomed us without any reservation, shared personal stories about his life, showed us how to paint and carve our own soapstone creations and also cooked us a delicious lunch (I seriously want that recipe, James). We had the best time getting to know James and we were honestly sad to leave. Unfortunately, he we left Kenya right after our visit and the only regret was that we didn't book this earlier in our travels. We would've love the opportunity to spend more time getting to know James. But, we will be back!! I would highly recommend that you book this experience and get to know James for yourself.

Amazing experience!! James was very patient and made sure we all left with beautiful soapstone paintings! He even took us to the Maasai market after the class to help us shop. Highly recommend this experience. Thanks again James!

I booked this experience for my colleague Barbara. She said that she had a wonderful time and highly recommends this experience. She actively participated in making her own soapstone bowl and commented on how great the lunch was. The host was friendly and welcoming and she left with new friends (other guests on the experience). Thank you James.
