First, we’ll visit the 300 year old Nezu shrine, which is my favorite shrine in Tokyo. I'll explain the history of the shrine and tell you some interesting stories about it. When you pass through the “100 red gate tunnel”, you’ll feel as if you were going back to the Edo era (17th to 19th century).

Secondly, we’ll walk around the Yanaka area, a part of Ueno where many temples and fashionable old shops are located. We’ll visit some ancient temples and learn their history, and we’ll also drop into some downtown pretty shops which are my favorites, and eat snacks if you like!

Ueno was one of the battlegrounds in the war that led to the Meiji Restoration in 1868. This conflict between the Shogunate and pro-Imperial forces resulted in the end of samurai society in Japan. I'll explain how the samurai changed their lives after the Meiji Restoration.

This tour not only offers you an enjoyable culture walk but also tells you about the end of the samurai as well as giving you an insight into the lives and beliefs of the common people in the Edo period.

If you join my other experiences as follows, you would be able to learn many cultures ( tea ceremony, garden, Noh theatre art, poets, architecture ) and some aesthetics of ancient Japanese.

I'm a certified guide at Bunkyo-city, that administers various historical and cultural sites and green in Tokyo.
I was born in Tokyo and have spent most of my life. I graduated from university with a degree in Japanese history and culture. During a 7-year stay in Holland I had the pleasure of introducing Japanese traditions to friends from around the world. I have qualifications of instructors of tea ceremony and Ikebana.

On the basis of that, I created four “story tours” on Airbnb:
1. Discover Zen Spirit
Tea ceremony experience https://abnb.me/2SVn7a6mRZ
2. Sacred garden

3. Tokyo live walk

4. Explore Zen spirit

The area we visit is a downtown area called Yanesen in the center of Tokyo.
There are many ancient temples and shrines here as well as old and new shops, some of which offer delicious snacks. I live very close to this area and shop here every day, so I can take you to many little-known places and tell you lots of things that you won’t find in the guide books.

The tour with Makiko through Ueno was a truly unforgettable experience. The combination of what was told and the places visited felt like a walk through Japanese history. The insight into the life in Tokyo from over 500 years ago until present day was given by Makiko in an excellent way with infographics and expertise. As I was at the end of my trip I had some unanswered questions about Japan which were all covered in detail. I was quite lucky as i was the only participant, so Makiko tailored the tour exactly to my needs. Beyond the service of 3 hours I was accompanied to selected shops after the tour, so I can take home wonderful souvenirs now. I am really thankful for the day and I was once again encouraged in my desire to visit Japan again and learn more about its history and philosophy. Then hopefully again with a tour guided by Makiko!

This was really an intimate and personal tour. Mkiko's passion for conserving Japanese tradition and culture was reflected every step of the way. Liked the printed materials which provided visual insights to the tour. The tour definitely offered local insights that we, as tourists, could have easily missed. Definitely worth the time if you are tired of shopping and cafe hopping all day. 3 hours were enough to show pretty good overview of Meiji Restoration (+ Edo period).

Makiko was such a great host for this experience. She is very pleasant, definitely knowledgeable about the history of Japan, and shows that she cares deeply about their traditions. It was refreshing to spend time walking around a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo. The temples were beautiful and not crowded at all.

Makiko was a wonderful host. She had prepared documents, maps, photos which helped with learning and insight regarding the history and some of the key people of Japanese history. She had in-depth knowledge, was very passionate and made this tour unique with the stories she told, the way she involved us and drew us into the stories. She stopped for some breaks and showed us some very unique shops along the way which supported some of the stories. Loved the walk, so pleased we joined Makiko on this experience plus I got some really amazing photographs.
