Have you ever wished to find yourself in a true "Indiana Jones" situation? While walking through nature, and finding forgotten historical sites? If yes, then this is the right trip for you :) At first, when I moved to Okinawa, I was surprised by how little information is left for us about this place. After spending a few years on the research, I discovered a lot of valuable and exciting facts, legends and stories. And the more I’ve been learning about the island I live on, the more inspired I’ve become, and the more I wanted to share my findings with others. During my research, I discovered a number of historical sites including sacred shrines, kings' tombs, power spots “utaki”, and more than 35 castle ruins from the early centuries of the Ryukyu Islands. Hidden from the public eye, these places still remain to hold its missing links and secrets. And as one may have guessed, those are the sites I am planning to bring you to :) Our plan would be: 1. Meeting at a setup point. 2. Drive to three different castle sites: Southern (Nanzan), Central (Shuzan) or Northern (Hokuzan) parts of the island. 3. Stop by a cafe of my choice for drinks and snacks at the end (please bring some extra 1000-1500 yen of cash)
Hi, my name is Natalia! I hold a Master's degree in philological studies (literature, art history), and an MBA degree in art direction and curatorial studies (Paris, France). I came to live in Okinawa due to my passion for nature, as I wanted to escape the noise and pollution of big cities. But also as a young art curator, eager and curious to work on a variety of cultural projects with the local art institutions. Depending on the project, I am mostly concerned with the topics related to environmental issues, identity, and cultural heritage. For this reason, I’ve been enthusiastically engaged in historical research about Okinawa on a daily basis.
This trip will give you a deeper insight into the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. You will be able to learn many interesting facts, but also enjoy a walk through the beautiful nature. During the day we will explore three castle sites in the Southern, Central or Northern parts of the island, as well as sacred sites and other interesting places. In the end we will stop at a special cafe for snacks and drinks.
