You'll first tour the organic mini-farm and focus on its unique features - how the garden and animals are organised and integrated using permaculture thinking. We talk about how chooks, goats and pigs can all be used for various purposes on a self-sufficient property. You'll also learn great techniques to grow organic vegies, berries and fruits successfully - how to make compost and enrich your soil organically, how to cultivate and weed efficiently, how to time your plantings for maximum productivity, and how to raise plants from seed to advanced seedlings before planting in your garden to make the most of your garden space. We'll finish by learning how to milk a goat, which is a fun thing to try and also a handy skill if you're considering becoming more self-sufficient one day. We'll serve a tasty morning tea during the workshop - prepared by Gunilla, who runs Home Grown on Piper cafe in Kyneton, so it'll be of gourmet quality. You can pick and take home some organic produce, seeds or seedlings for your garden at the end of the workshop. The aim is to inspire you in your own garden, so you'll feel confident to take the seedlings home and grow them successfully yourself! You receive free coffees at our cafe Home Grown on Piper if you order lunch there on your way home after the workshop, which should top off an enjoyable and inspiring day.

I am a passionate organic grower with 20 years' experience, and I supply vegies, berries and fruits to 30 families in Castlemaine and Kyneton. I combine techniques from both permaculture and traditional organic gardening to produce an amazing variety and quantity of produce in a small space on my mini-farm. I am also an experienced teacher, so I communicate clearly and engagingly. I aim for the workshop to be relaxing and enjoyable, but I also aim to convey plenty of information. I want you to come away inspired with ideas and enthusiasm for your own garden!

The workshop is held at the beautiful Metcalfe Mini-Farm, where we organically grow vegies, berries and fruits to feed thirty local families. It's a family-run farm of just over an acre, with a half-acre vegie garden, berry fields, small orchard, dairy goats, pigs and chooks. This integrated, compact, productive property is the culmination of a dream Rob in particular has worked towards for 20 years, including 9 years at this property.
