Everyone knows about Kyoto's famous rock gardens and resplendent temples, but did you know that beneath it all is a huge body of water? This water is mostly hidden from view but it gushes out of old wells in the middle of the city.
Gulay and I host the 100% 5-star-rated Hidden Water Cycling Tour of Kyoto, where we focus on Kyoto's special connection to water. We have pre-recorded high-quality videos together and Gulay will be meeting you on our online version of the cycling tour. After a quick round of introductions, you'll Zoom Around Kyoto with her!
Gulay will first take you to her favorite shrine where she personally knows the priest, and then up along the Kamo River, the main river flowing through the city center. You'll then enjoy the sounds at a Japanese garden where wildlife and plants of all kinds still thrive because of the flowing waters.
Afterwards, you’ll visit a shrine built to repel the flu pandemic of 1,020 years ago, and participate in a simple ritual to hopefully end the pandemic of our times. We finish at a teahouse that has been run by 25 generations of the same family. They have made rice cakes from the well on their premises for 1,018 years.

She used to be a guide in Istanbul, and for over 10 years she guided thousands of people through Turkey's best sights as a specialist in Christian and Islamic history. Gulay will draw on her deep knowledge of archaeology and medieval history to bring your attention to the whimsical, the fantastic, and the obscure hiding around the corner.

- Beautiful experience visiting the temples in Kyoto! If you've ever wanted to travel to Japan and clearly... you can't right now because of Covid... then, this is the experience for you! It'll give you just a little bit of the travel bug to make you want to bring the whole family along in future!
- My daughter purchased this experience as a gift for my mother’s birthday. Gulay seems lovely, and the places she took us to seem very interesting. Unfortunately, I had to repeat most of what Gulay was saying because my mother had a difficult time hearing. I don’t know if the issue was on our side or Gulay’s. Also, we were expecting to see more of Kyoto, but most of the experience took place in Gulay’s home. I think this experience has a lot of potential if the audio is upgraded and if more time is spent around Kyoto rather than in Gulay’s home. We did, however, enjoy it and we especially appreciate the information sent after the experience.
- Gülay’s presentation was so much fun. I love how she brought her own personal experience into the story telling of a bike ride through Kyoto. She was very knowledgeable and you can immediately tell that she’s passionate about sharing her experiences with everyone. It was about an hour long but felt like much longe! A must try as a family night or cute friend hangout. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And I can wait to actually have a chance to visit Kyoto in person.
- Gulay was a great host! My husband and I did this experience for our anniversary and had an amazing time. We can’t wait to go visit Kyoto in the future! This was our first Airbnb experience online and we highly recommend. It was a great way to try something new and celebrate while also staying safe.
