I will take you on a virtual tour of the galleries of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to find the incredible art made by queer artists from across the 20th century. All artworks you'll see on the tour are made by queer artists and all feature in MoMA's world-beating collection of modern art. First I will give you an introduction to MoMA, and why modern art is a treasure trove of LGBTQ art and culture. Then I will introduce you to the question we will ask ourselves throughout the tour: what makes an artwork queer? If you've ever wondered how to spot queer art in museums, this tour is for you! I will answer that question by closely looking at the artwork of 5 artists in MoMA's collection—some artists you will definitely be familiar with, others will hopefully be new to you and will open your eyes to new and exciting queer art. After showing you the artworks in great detail and explaining them to you, I will ask for your comments, thoughts, questions and opinions to get a discussion going. Modern art is a gift to talk about and it always helps to have new perspectives on it. Every single time I do this tour I find something new to appreciate in the art thanks to the thoughts and comments of my participants. We end with an overview of the queer art we've seen and final thoughts on what it all means
Other things to note
The tour is done over Zoom. You will receive the link in the confirmation email when you book. During the talk you can ask questions at any time, and I hope we will get a little discussion going after each stop. The tour lasts an hour and a half, including time for questions.

I joined MoMA last year as a Museum Educator in their Education Department, in a team that specialized in digital learning. I spent weeks in research co-writing the Museum of Modern Art's first ever queer tour, which I hosted IRL before the museum closed due to COVID. From my research I identified over 230 queer artists in MoMA's collection. I rapidly converted it into an online Zoom tour and actually think it's even better this way! I've recently done this tour via Zoom for staff at the New York Times to fantastic reviews.
Before MoMA, I worked at the British Museum where I advised on their first ever LGBTQ related exhibition (that covered 10,000 years of same-sex desire) and I spearheaded the effort to get the Museum to fly the rainbow flag, the first time the Museum had flown any flag other than the Union Jack in its 267 year history.

A fascinating look at Queer art and artists in the MOMA collection and its place in our history. Both well known and lesser known artists and art are highlighted during different decades- which added a lot to the presentation and discussion. It was a very quick 90 minutes and i could gladly have enjoyed it for several hours. George was an excellent presenter who had much to add about the works shown and the men and women who created them. It’s always a treat to be able to further explore the treasures of MOMA- especially in this time of social distancing. You’ll definitely learn something new during the experience and maybe even gain new perspective and appreciation for the works and artists. Highly recommended.

George was super knowledgeable and very personable-- he made the tour fun for everyone! I appreciated his ability to contextualize the artwork as well as its relationship to the museum and various artistic movements through his storytelling.

George is welcoming, knowledgeable, and fun! You’ll go in-depth with a few artworks as well as participate in (or just listen to, if you’d rather) prompted discussions with George and the other guests.

My partner and I had a wonderful experience with George on his outstanding your of Queer Art at MoMA. He brings his own depth of knowledge and experience to the tour and is genuinely interested in hearing your interpretation and impressions of the works. I learned a lot about Queer art, from a historical and cultural perspective I would have otherwise not been exposed to. I very greatly enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the Queer community and the artists who share their experiences so powerfully. Beautiful stories and an experience we won't soon forget. Thank you George!

George is knowledgeable and passionate about art. I arranged a private experience as a gift for informed art collectors and we all enjoyed our time with George immensely. We especially appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and explore ideas. If you are missing museums and looking to learn, explore, and inquire, then this is the experience for you. Thank you, George!

It was a super nice experience! I knew nothing about queer art before this tour and thanks to it I discovered a bit about what it's referred to! I really enjoyed the historical insights of each piece of art.
