We'll meet at an organic café, where we will get to know each other over a coffee or tea. Here we will have a crash-course in Zero Waste lifestyle, shopping methods, and best practices before we hit the Market. Zero Waste grocery shopping is all about being prepared in order to avoid food packaging and single-use-plastics. Using reusable bags, wax wrappers and containers, we will be sourcing the ingredients for our picnic lunch. We are challenging ourselves to change our habits as consumers in order to be responsible for our environmental footprint. I will guide you in recognizing waste items vs. bulk, communicating our zero waste stance with the vendors and overseeing that our all-in zero waste ambition stays consistent. You will be provided with a sample kit of reusables for your own shopping: 3 reusable bags and 2 wax wrappers. The Chamonix Farmer's Market offers a wide variety of French, Italian, and Swiss specialties from the region, including organic fruits and veggies, artisanal cheese and meats, nuts, olives, wine, heirloom bread, fresh pasta, spices, honey, preserves, and much more. There is also a beautiful craft side of the market with soaps, candles, etc. I'll prepare our picnic nearby, where we'll enjoy a 100% locally sourced lunch with the view of Mont Blanc. You'll leave with new knowledge and tools for your zero waste journey, lots of goodies, but NO TRASH.
I am co-author of the recipe book Heart of Raw Food and love sharing my passions of locavore cuisine, nutrition, health, sustainability, and herbalism. I come from a multi-cultural foodie background raised between Chamonix, Norway, New Mexico, and Hawai'i. I grew up grocery shopping at the Chamonix Farmer's Market and I know several of the local vendors since childhood. In the past year I have been diving into the zero waste lifestyle and eliminating single-use-plastics. I currently source most of the groceries for my family at the Saturday market for the quality and diversity of food, zero waste bulk options, and the connection with farmers/producers. Living zero waste takes practice and I'm excited to share my insights and shortcuts with you!
