I run half-day walking tours through the Monocacy Battlefield located just outside Frederick, MD. In this 2 1/2 hour experience, guests will learn about the amazing people who clashed in an American moment that historians have called the "Battle that Saved Washington."
Philosophically I believe that a tactile learning experience, that of touching and physically being present in a location, gives a greater depth of learning and aids profoundly in our understanding of the world. I have had my greatest teaching experiences while on study abroad with students. I hope through this endeavor I can use my experience and knowledge to help guest maximize their experiences.
Other things to note
We will drive between tour stops (less than a 1/2 mile each) and require some walking mostly on level even ground. Please wear appropriate shoe and clothing.

For the last twenty years, I have been a professor of history at various colleges in Maryland. Fourteen years ago I became a full time associate professor at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. Over last twelve years I have had the privilege of running over twenty study abroad classes to five different countries (Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Turkey and the United Kingdom). I have also taken students on dozens of day trips to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore as well as numerous Civil War Battlefields. I have also helped run dozens of camping trips and outings for my sons’ scout troop.

I recommend Fred to you wholeheartedly. I recommend him especially if you are take-it-or-leave-it about history. Fred will weave the events together and bring them to life for you, with all the little bits of detail included. It’s fascinating.
There’s choreography to these battles. A tension, consequences, decisiveness ...that ...is better seen on the ground with a guide pointing to a field there and a ridge over there, and how these forces met.
It’s totally worth it!

My family enjoyed great storytelling in a beautiful location from a knowledgeable guide about an interesting period of history. Frederick clearly loves Civil War history and answered all our questions. We will likely sign up for one of his other tours in the future!
