I begin the workshop with an introduction and demonstration of the process we will work on for the day. I offer a resource list and inspirational materials such as journals and images. All classes run from 10am - 4pm with a lunch break. I encourage people to being their own lunch. I provide coffee/tea. At end of the class I will conduct a short critique so that we can all come together to enjoy each other's work and hear about their process with the materials and outcome. I work with individuals as needed, and as a group. I believe that by offering guidelines and technique process, then opening the space for exploration people are able to develop their personal relationship with the materials and art form. I have found this teaching style very successful.
I came to making washi through my fascination and appreciation of Japanese aesthetics, philosophies of wabi sabi, and yûgen, and my passion for organic materials. Many years spent collecting dye plant materials for loom weaving and basketry easily translated into using some of the same dye plants to add color and texture to handmade paper. The ancient art of papermaking, for me the process of weaving with water, fiber and a screen, has been the creative thread of my artistic process for three decades. I began teaching workshops at my home studio and at art centers in 1994. The workshops I offer are designed around papermaking and fiber art. No previous experience is necessary. Come enjoy the magical world of transforming fiber into sculpture!
I happily offer coffee/tea/water during the workshop. Please bring your own lunch.
All creative materials and supplies are included in the class fee.
My studio is located in Santa Fe's Historic District, on Canyon Road. The property was the home/studio of weaver Alice Kagawa Parrott, who is known for her clothing and tapestry designs. The building where we will work was inspired by ancient Japanese farmhouse aesthetic and charm. Canyon Road is within walking distance to the Plaza and the Railyard Art District, restaurants and art galleries.
This location is not wheelchair accessible. My studio is also my gallery, so visitors are welcome to schedule a studio tour by appointment. *** Workshops are not offered on other scheduled dates promoted on my website.
