“At no other time has Nature concentrated such a wealth of valuable nourishment into such a small space as in the cacao bean.” Alexander von Humboldt
It was in the south of Mexico, more than 3,000 years ago when the taste and properties of cacao have been discovered.
Join us in this tasting experience where past and present converge with a whole cultural background and a bunch of flavors and aromas.
We will walk you through the history of chocolate while we use our senses to perceive a variety of Mexican chocolate in different presentations, from the way the Mayas and Aztecs consumed it, to the chocolate that conquered Europe.
We will try some of our favorite handmade chocolate produced by Mayan communities in artisanal and sustainable ways.

Coming from different parts of Mexico, we have traveled the country and worked in tourism for several years. One of our passions is the diversity of the mexican culture. We love to share and promote its wide variety of rich flavors, fresh ingredients and traditional processes.
We are the founders of a project called Tulum Experiences. As guides and cultural representatives of Mexico, our aim is to provide experiences where people can appreciate food and beverages, presented in such way that value the history, culture and environment of our country.

We will conduct our tasting in the rooftop bar of the Xkeken Hostel in the center of Tulum. The terrace has very nice sunset views and a cozy bar and it will be closed for the tastings. Feel free to stay in the bar after the experience.

- Samira was exceptional. She went through the entire history of chocolate. Her storytelling was so educational and entertaining! She answered every question and let us taste the most delicious chocolate I've ever tasted. Sami explained it was authentically made by the Mayan community Tres Reyes, a few hours away from Tulum. Since ita not sold in town and I loved it so much, Sami generously made her own stash available to me and even offered to find out if I could get it shipped to the states! This little taste of culture was an amazing experience! Must book!
- We loved Shamira and Bernardo so much! Amazing experience and very knowledgeable friendly hosts. We’ve gotten to experience a lot of great things on our holiday including a snorkeling experience in Cozumel, this was by far one of our favorites, if not our favorite. Crazy to say but seriously the best! Shamira was a great story teller and even made us giggle. Bernardo was a great source of information and both were a perfect pair to help us dive deep into the culture and appreciation of cacao and chocolate making. Such extensive history that made us want to eat cacao and chocolate everyday. It’s always fun doing touristy things but there’s nothing like enjoying the true culture of wherever you are and appreciating and learning more about traditions that come along with. The hosts also work with local indigenous communities to provide the best cacao and chocolate. Don’t hesitate, book this experience!!! Can’t beat the knowledge for the price!! Also gave great recommendations for the rest of our trip. Thank you Bernardo & Shamira!!
- The Good: The woman who hosted this was very nice. The roof was comfortable and has a nice view of Tulum. The bad: The experience started 20 minutes late. Covid problems: No one wore a mask; the host stood very close when she talked to us; everyone took chocolate from the same bowl and then put their hands in their mouths. The tables were very close together; I was just a few inches from another guest. The information on the history of chocolate was interesting. The drinking chocolate tasted good; the other three chocolates were, for me, very bitter. For covid times, this is not a good activity.
