Explore Old part of the city of Delhi in a new way! My walking tour is oriented at learning about the history of the once walled city of Old Delhi and its people, especially, members of the Jain faith and their eating habits that led to the emergence of several historical vegan food spots scattered across the small labyrinths of Old Delhi. As we explore the hidden sidestreets, crumbling palaces, and secret rooftops, I will show how Indian dietary habits have evolved over thousands of years and how more than half of the population here developed vegetarianism as a lifestyle choice. We will discuss the history of vegetarianism in India and its roots in casteism, and compare it with the ethical veganism movement and how it started. After seeing the numerous vegan food spot scattered through Old Delhi, you'll see it is not difficult to adapt to Veganism in this environment. And of course, no walk is completed without tasting the local food. Indulge yourself in food history which is as ancient as this city!
I started doing heritage walks 10 years ago for visiting PhD students, journalists, and associates from the embassies or culture institutes that I used to translate for. My extensive knowledge of Delhi's rich history is in part due to my experience as a content writer and freelance writer, but mostly it comes from my deeply rooted passion for connecting with minority groups and following their experiences back for several generations, including my own family who lived through the British occupation of Old Delhi. My connections with the Jain community have blessed me with knowledge of the history of Veganism in Delhi and beliefs of non-violence to other living beings. Co-hosted with fun-loving local experts Sidhant & Vikrant
We'll be tasting the offerings of several food vendors who I know and trust. All food is vegan.
We'll meet early in the morning at the local Jain temple where I will narrate their rich history as we explore their holy ground, including the Birds Hospital to meet some caring nurses. I will show you the roots of their belief system of "ahimsa", or non-violence, and how it reflects upon their dietary habits. Next we will explore the history of Old Delhi, stopping to eat at secret historical Jain food spots you never thought were vegan!
