This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold. The walking distance will be approximately 3/4 of a mile and we will cover about 10 sites.
The second leg of the tour will continue in the Finacial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825; We will end the tour at the South Street Seaport - a site where enslaved Africans arrived on slave ships. This walking distance will be about 1 mile and we will cover about 10 sites along the way.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument (entrance is optional); We end at the infamous 5-Points area at Pearl St. The walking distance will be approximately 3/4 of a mile and cover about 10 sites.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for lunch or a snack at any time. Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book.
Other things to note
Due to COVID-19 there will be limited bathroom stops along the tour. Please dress weather appropriate. If you are taking a "For Hire" car service - tell the driver to take you to the National Museum of the American Indian at 1 Bowling Green.

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 30+ sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

- This was amazing!! For starters, I can’t believe thus experience is only $25! Lawrence is incredibly personable, a great story teller, obviously passionate about the subject matter and very inspiring. He took his time, leaving ample room for my questions and inquiries. I feel incredibly enriched by his tour. I am definitely looking for the book he is working on for my personal collection.
- My nine-year-old and I are so glad that we went on Lawrence’s tour. From me (the mom): I don’t think you can appreciate the history of Manhattan without appreciating the history of the people who built it. Lawrence is a scholar. On the tour, he brings a copy of his self published book which is chock-full of citations and photographs that really provide a deeper perspective. He was a flexible tour guide who was able to relate extremely well to my son and also talk to me at a grown-up level. I would highly recommend this to her to any one who wants to have a more profound understanding of the city. Also, this tour felt very safe during the time of Covid. From my nine-year-old: It was very interesting. Lawrence did great job of explaining things in a way that made sense to me and it was also very fun but serious.
