Starting at the gates of Mdina, we will head into the old capital city to walk along the most beautiful streets and the most amazing monuments in the Silent City. We will be going through some of the places in the city where movies have been filmed. We will take in the best sights of the city and have time to take pictures while listening to the most amazing stories. After walking past the Cathedral and seeing the view from the bastions, we will head outside of the walls into Rabat for us to stop at a place where we can taste the famous ricotta or pea pastizzi along with the local drink Kinnie. We then walk through the narrow winding streets of Rabat to get in the centre of the town where after walking past the St Paul's Collegiate Church, we visit a traditional wood burning oven to taste the home made ricotta pies and the fried anchovy dough called sfineg. We then keep walking around the streets of Rabat past one of the old windmills and into the Dominican Convent to proceed into one of the local bars where people gather in the evenings to have a beer and there we get to try the local beer along with the traditional Maltese sausage and peppered goat cheese. After walking through some more atmospheric streets, we finish off in one of the traditional food restaurants known to this town to taste the local rabbit, escargot and quail along with a glass of local wine.
I have been a fully licensed professional tour guide for the past 15 years and have always loved doing the job as you get to meet new people everyday whilst showing them the beauty of your country. This tour I offer takes guests through the beautiful towns of Mdina and its suburb Rabat which are a tourist destination of their own. However, since I myself am from Rabat and have always lived here, I can give a tour with a different perspective. I have also been doing volontary work in my town for many years now, through which I came in contact with a very big amount of people in Rabat who will be treating yourself with the same respect reserved for me. We will be going to different locations which are normally out of the sight of normal tourist routes and you will get to have a closer encounter with the people and their food.
We will be visiting a bakery where the owners will open the very old oven doors for us to look inside the massive structure. The bar is the meeting place for people to have a drink after a day of work and discuss anything going on in the islands. The restaurants in Rabat are renowned for being the place where to go for rustic and traditional foods like the best rabbit, quail, horse meat, sausage and snails.
