On our private tour of the treatment facility, the knowledgeable Michael Ruiz, Chief Plant Operator of the Donald C. Tillman (DCT) Water Reclamation Plant, will show us the plant's processes. Then, we'll go out into the field to see these processes in action, including a trip through the underground pipe galleys. Afterwards, we'll embark on an exclusive guided tour through much of the 6.5-acre garden designed by world-famous designer Dr. Koichi Kawara. We will witness the 2.75-acre lake that is filled with the plant's treated water and learn about many of the very intentional designs and aspects of the garden from the very knowledgable Japanese Garden board member Michael Fritzen.
Hi. I'm Ben, a member of the Atlas Obscura community. I am someone always seeking out strange, intriguing, off-the-beaten-path, and under-the-radar venues and locations in and around Los Angeles. I am fascinated with the intricate systems in place in our city and learning about how they work and then sharing that knowledge. As a seeker of serene, peaceful settings, I am also very intrigued with Japanese gardens and the history and intention behind the way in which they are constructed. We will be joined by Michael Ruiz, Chief Plant Operator of the Donald C. Tillman (DCT) Water Reclamation Plant, as well as Japanese Garden board member Michael Fritzen, whose credits include work with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Zoo, Autry Museum, and The Huntington.

This event will take place at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant and attached Japanese garden. We will begin with a full tour of the plant, including journeying through several of the underground pipe galleys. Then we will make our way through the Japanese garden.
This tour will include at least 90 minutes of walking, so please make sure that you can handle standing/walking for that long. There will be a couple places to lean/sit for a moment along the way. There are some stairs up and down to access the underground pipe galleys.
