If you've been dreaming about homesteading, this is the tour for you. Visit our three acre homestead where we gather eggs for breakfast, milk goats for cheesemaking and grow vegetables for canning. Our farm mascot, Curney the super friendly Turkey, will give you a tour of our kitchen garden, goat barn, and hand built chicken coops. You will get to interact with the animals and see how they are set up to free range and intermingle. We currently raise several varieties of Orphington breed chickens, Royal Palm turkeys and Nigerian Dwarf goats. We will show you the specific needs of each animal, from housing, feed, predator protection to basic animal husbandry. During chicken breeding season, you can see our indoor incubator and brooding box set up and learn how we care for chicks from hatching to 3 weeks, when they graduate to the outdoors. Throughout the tour, you will have a chance to focus on any aspect that most appeals to your own interests and ask lots of questions. We ask that you keep in mind that homesteading activities are seasonal and will depend on the time of year of the tour. The animals may be less active if the weather is poor and there is less growing in the gardens in winter. But there is always plenty to see and learn here, regardless of the time of year.
We have been raising chickens for six years on our three acre farm. We incubate chicks, ducklings and turkeys eight months out of the year for individual customers across the state. This past year, we obtained National Poultry Improvement Plan Certification, which involves regular testing of our birds for health standards. We have taught a class at our farm once a year for the past four years on chicken keeping, covering care from chick to adult, shelter, feed and predator protection. We also have a small flock of heritage turkeys, six goats, a guardian livestock dog and a productive kitchen garden. We enjoy being sought out as a resource for chicken questions in my community. Our passion is sharing homesteading knowledge that helps others learn to grow their own food and become more self sufficient.
We will provide hot or cold herbal tea and water for refreshment.
We will be mostly outdoors on our 3-acre property, walking through the animal pastures and barns. We are located adjacent to a fifth generation working dairy farm and have a beautiful view of roaming cows in expansive pastures, with Collins mountain in the background. We are a peaceful spot tucked away in the woods to enjoy the quiet of nature.
