We will reach the colorful dock of the small fishing port and immediately fall in love with it! In this Provencal village, with its Mediterranean atmosphere, its colorful facades, its lively streets, we will recount the history of the port and its relationship with neighboring Ollioules. Sanary won World War II bravery medals - who did she sequester from the Nazis? And why did a small fishing village stand up to the Third Reich? The incredible provencal market is a feast for the eyes and all the senses. Not for nothing it was chosen "The most beautiful market in France" recently in May 2019. We will stroll through the market stalls laden with tasty delights from Provence, we will have an opportunity to taste the best products that the region has to offer. The market is not only a food market, but also features linen, clothes, shoes, baskets, dishes etc., all typical of the region. It is truly a must see and taste experience when visiting Provence.
I’ve had a love affair with Provence for over 15 years. An avid traveler, writer and a historical researcher, my specialty is reconstituting micro-histories of buildings and houses. I love getting lost in culture, history, natural and urban beauty. I've been visiting Sanary-sur-mer for years and especially enjoy it's incredible local market, rated the top market in all of France (May 2019) ! I live in Provence, in the authentic village of Ollioules just next to Sanary. I know every corner, alleyway, shop and restaurant. I have been exploring these places around my village for years that most tourists do not know, and now I want to open it to the world.
Tasting the local specialty - Cade!
Besides the splendid market at the heart of the port, we will visit the famous tower of Sanary from the middle ages. From the top we will have beautiful views of the bay. It is also holds a great collection of archaeological artifacts from sunken ships from the 5th century. We will then climb up gently to a small chapel holding the best examples of ex-votos. Finally we will visit the house of a very famous person who made Sanary his home.
