Come meet me at the lush patio of my aunt Luz to learn the history and basics of tortilla and salsa making! A hands on workshop where we’ll first prepare a wonderful salsa and the masa (dough) for our tortillas. While our masa rests and our salsa cools off, we'll walk across the street to the Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, a wonderful sixteenth century ex-convent. There I'll tell you the amazing history of the Spanish conquest, the heroic history of our independence and of the defense of the young independent Mexico. Stories of bravery, romance, betrayal, honor; the eventful forging of this wonderful country. We'll admire the museum's exhibition and beautiful architecture. Then we'll return to our patio where the masa is waiting, and learn how to make tortillas to perfection. How to press them, set them in the hot comal and cook the most Mexican of foods. A tradition that's older than Mexico... heck, it's older than the Aztec Empire! Then we'll relax with a refreshing glass of "agua fresca" and eat some of our freshly made delicious tortillas with our salsa, cheese and chicharrón. Kick back and be happy for a while after a good work. You'll be learning the secrets of our most fundamental food, and learning about our history among friends in a fun, relaxed and delicious way. I'll make my best to enamor you of my culture and make all this learning entirely entertaining. ;)
I'm a Mexican opera singer, architect, philosopher and cook with a lifetime of experience preparing Mexican food. Since I was a little boy I learned to cook with my mother, my aunts and my grandmother, grasping the mysteries and traditions of our cuisine. I've been teaching the basics of this knowledge at home for three years, and I often cater for private events. I'm also a passionate and ardent student of history, currently studying a masters degree in Critical Theory with specialty in history at the Instituto 17. But above all I'm a story teller... and there's just so much to tell about Mexico, so many interesting details and fun anecdotes to help you understand and fall in love with this country. Welcome to the beautiful and lush patio of my aunt Luz! A green micro-paradise to feel at home where the table will be set and everything ready for our workshop. We'll also visit the Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, the wonderful Sixteen Century Ex-Convent of Churubusco. Beautiful architecture with a long and interesting history, stage of a major battle between the Mexican army and the US invading forces in 1847.

Bring comfortable shoes and clothes... and make sure that you can roll up your sleeves! We'll use our hands to cook, but you can wash them here before we start. We will be in a covered part of the patio, but we'll cross the street, so bring warm clothes if it's cold, and an umbrella if it's raining.
