I'll take you on a 6.5-mile trail run where we'll explore this remote, quiet corner of the forest - including a historic suspension bridge over South Mills River. Pisgah is the oldest National Forest in the eastern US and heavy logging operations blanketed the Turkey Pen area throughout the 1900's. Along the way, I'll highlight the area's unique flora and fauna and give a brief history of how Pisgah and the Biltmore Estate helped shape modern day logging techniques worldwide. Many visitors simply hike to the river and back, not realizing the extensive network of trail in the area. Also unique to this run is the array of old growth trees scattered along the trail, a rarity for an area that been logged so heavily. We will meet at a gravel pull-off at the intersection of Turkey Pen Road and NC-280. You will follow me up an unpaved road ~1-mile to the trailhead and we will go over the final details before our run. There is limited cell reception at the trailhead, but plenty on the state highway where we initially meet. The route has plenty of roots and rocks along the way, but for the most part, climbing is gradual and along former road beds. All abilities are welcome, and it's expected that there will be a couple of sections that will be more of a hike than run. We can even hop in the river after we're done!
With 5 years of extensive van-based travels, I've logged well over 10,000 miles on the trail across the better half of the US and parts of Canada and Mexico. I knew that when I settled somewhere, I would be in Western North Carolina. I've explored every corner of Pisgah National Forest and I know where the best trail running is at. I began my career as a trail and ultrarunner in 2015, with limited experience running until 2012. Since then, I've competed in several races including multiple 50-milers and one 100-miler in 2018. I spend countless hours on the trail in Pisgah and can frequently be found attempting solo 20+ mile runs in the forest - but I still know what it takes to start from scratch. As of 2019, I am the only permitted Trail Running Guide in Pisgah National Forest.

We'll follow South Mills River for the start and finish of our run. For the middle, we'll follow old logging paths up a ravine along the east side of Poundingstone Mountain. From there we'll follow a beautifully built singletrack trail to another logging path that leads back to the river.
最多可有5位年满18周岁的参与者参加。 Running experience is a must, but this route is friendly to newer trail runners.
This is a moderate trail run with 1,100' of climbing over ~6.5 miles. Most of the climbing is on old railroad beds, with only one steep section near the highest point. There are several stream crossings that may require you to get your feet wet at times.
